Back-to-School Uniform Checklist for Irish Primary Schools

Getting ready for the new school year? Use this handy checklist to make sure your child has everything they need before the first day back. We've broken it down by category so you can tick things off as you go.

The Essentials

Most Irish primary schools require the following core items. Always check your school's specific uniform policy, as crested items in particular vary by school.

  • ☐ Crested sweatshirt or jumper (x2 recommended)
  • ☐ School trousers / pinafore or skirt (x2 recommended)
  • ☐ Polo shirts or shirts (x3–5 recommended)
  • ☐ School shoes (sturdy, black, closed-toe)
  • ☐ School bag / schoolbag
  • ☐ PE gear (check your school's requirements)

Clothing Checklist

  • ☐ Crested sweatshirt — correct school crest, correct colour
  • ☐ Spare crested sweatshirt (for when one is in the wash)
  • ☐ School trousers or pinafore/skirt in the correct colour
  • ☐ White or school-colour polo shirts (enough for the week)
  • ☐ School tie (if required)
  • ☐ Tracksuit (if required for PE days)
  • ☐ Spare socks and underwear in the school bag for younger children

Footwear

  • ☐ Black school shoes (leather or leather-look, closed-toe)
  • ☐ Trainers/runners for PE (check if a separate pair is required)
  • Labelling — Don't Skip This!

Lost property boxes in Irish primary schools are legendary. Label everything before the first day.

  • ☐ Iron-on or sew-in name labels on all clothing
  • ☐ Name written inside shoes
  • ☐ Name on schoolbag, lunchbox, and water bottle
  • ☐ Name on PE bag and gear

Sizing Tips

  • Buy one size up on sweatshirts and trousers for younger children — they grow fast and you'll get more wear out of them.

Before the First Day — Final Checks

  • ☐ All items washed and ready to wear
  • ☐ Everything labelled
  • ☐ Shoes broken in (wear them around the house for a few days)
  • ☐ Schoolbag packed with stationery and books
  • ☐ PE day confirmed so the right gear is packed
